Signs Your Nervous System Is Overloaded And Why Willpower Can't Save You

Stop trying to push through. Learn the signs of nervous system overload and why willpower is not the answer to chronic stress.

We need to have a chat about the “keep calm and carry on” mentality. You know the one. It’s that very British compulsion to stiffen the upper lip, pour another coffee, and pretend that your left eye isn’t twitching involuntarily.

If you have been feeling like you are wading through treacle, or perhaps like a tightly coiled spring ready to snap because someone breathed too loudly near you, this is for you. We often label these feelings as just “being busy” or “stressed”, but there is a physiological reality underneath that we need to address.

Your nervous system might be shouting for help, and frankly, willpower is not going to fix it.

Identifying the Signs of Overload

When we talk about a dysregulated nervous system, it doesn’t always look like a full-blown panic attack. Sometimes it is far more subtle and insidious. It creeps up on you until you realise you haven’t felt properly rested in three years.

Here are some common indicators that your system is overloaded:

  • The ‘Tired but Wired’ feeling: You are exhausted all day, but as soon as your head hits the pillow, your brain decides it’s the perfect time to replay every awkward conversation you’ve had since 2004... thanks brain!.
  • Sensory Overwhelm: The label on your jumper feels like sandpaper, the lights are too bright, or the sound of your partner chewing makes you want to scream.
  • Digestive Drama: Your gut is often the first thing to go. Bloating, IBS flare-ups, or just that general knot in your stomach that won't shift.
  • Doom Scrolling: You find yourself mindlessly scrolling for hours, not because you are interested, but because you are numbing out (this is actually a Freeze response).
  • Emotional Snapping: Your patience fuse is non-existent. You go from 0 to 100 over the washing up being left on the side.
Reality Check: If you are reading this list and nodding along, please know you are not broken. Your body is doing exactly what it was designed to do...protect you. It just hasn’t realised the threat has passed or wasn't as severe as it seemed in the first place.

Why Willpower Is Not Enough

This is the part where most of us get it wrong. We try to “mindset” our way out of a physiological response. We tell ourselves to “just get a grip” or “push through”.

But here is the science bit (without the boring jargon): When your nervous system is in survival mode (fight, flight, freeze, fawn or flop), your Prefrontal Cortex (the part of your brain responsible for logic, reasoning, and willpower) goes offline.

Your body thinks there is a tiger in the room. You cannot logic your way out of a tiger attack. You cannot “positive vibe” a tiger away.

When you try to use willpower to force yourself to work harder, be nicer, or calm down while your body is screaming “danger”, you are essentially pressing the accelerator while the handbrake is on. It is exhausting, and it doesn’t work.

Gentle Support Over Force

So, if we can’t bully ourselves into calmness, what do we do? We have to speak the body’s language. We need to signal safety, not through thoughts, but through sensation and energy.

This is where Reiki and somatic practices come in. It is not about ignoring the stress; it is about showing your nervous system that it is safe to come down from high alert.

If you are recognising these signs in yourself, stop trying to fix it with a to-do list. Start small. Feel your feet on the floor. Exhale longer than you inhale. And if you need help shifting that stuck energy, I am here to help you regulate.
