Let’s be honest for a moment. When you hear the word Reiki, do you picture incense, chanting, and someone waving their hands around while humming a mysterious tune? If you do, you are not alone. That is exactly what I used to think before I really understood the mechanics of it.
There is a lot of fluff out there that can make energy work feel inaccessible or just plain odd. Here at Reflect Grow and Heal, we like to strip things back and look at what is actually happening. So let’s put on our detective hats and Super Sleuth what is really going on during a session.
In the simplest terms possible, Reiki is a Japanese stress reduction and relaxation technique that also promotes healing. The word itself comes from two Japanese words. Rei means God’s wisdom or higher intelligence, and Ki means life force energy.
Before your eyes glaze over at the phrase life force energy, think about it biologically. We are bio electrical beings. Our hearts beat using electrical impulses. Our brains fire neurons. We run on energy. When that energy is low, we are more likely to feel stressed or unwell. When it is supported, we cope better and recover faster.
This is where most misconceptions live. Feeling safe trying something new often starts with knowing what you are not signing up for.
The most common feedback I hear after a session is that people feel lighter or deeply rested. This is not magic. It is your nervous system doing exactly what it is designed to do.
Most of us live in a near constant state of fight or flight. Reiki supports a shift into rest and digest, the parasympathetic state. This is where your body can repair, regulate, and recover.
That deep calm is simply your system finally exhaling.
No. You do not need to believe in Reiki for it to work. It is not dependent on faith.
Think of it like Wi Fi. You do not need to understand how the signal works for your phone to connect. Reiki functions in a similar way. You just need to allow yourself to rest.
If you are exhausted, burnt out, or disconnected, you do not need fixing. You may simply need a recharge.
