You're Not Lazy You're Dysregulated

You're Not Lazy You're Dysregulated

Stop the shame spiral. You are likely not lazy, just dysregulated. Learn the difference between a character flaw and a nervous system freeze response.

We need to talk about the L-word.

No, not love. I am talking about Lazy.

I see you. Sitting there, perhaps scrolling through this on your phone, and in the back of your mind, there's a screaming list of things you “should” be doing. The washing pile of doom is threatening to cause an avalanche. The emails are stacking up. You haven't washed your hair in four days if your totally honest.

And the internal monologue?

It's bloody brutal.

It goes something like this:

Why can’t you just get up? Everyone else manages this. You're so lazy. You're useless.”

I want you to take a deep breath and hear me when I say this.

Maybe...You're not lazy. Maybe... You're dysregulated.

There's a massive difference between the two, and understanding it changes well...everything!.

The Difference Between Laziness and Shutdown

Let’s be real a sec. Laziness.. deciding to laze, lounge, chill, chillax is a choice. It's deciding, “You know what? I don’t want to do that today, I’m gonna watch Netflix instead,” and then actually enjoying the Netflix. It feels light. It feels like you're reclaiming time for you.  If your rest is genuine and you're happy - brilliant!

If you're not happy, what you're experiencing? That heavy, paralysed feeling where you physically can't make your body move towards the task? That's not laziness. That is a freeze response.

When your nervous system perceives a threat and yes, in our modern world, an overwhelming to do list or even just emptying the dishwasher could counts as a threat to your brain and so it slams on the brakes. Your brain says, “It is not safe to do 'the thing' right now,” and it pulls the plug on your motivation.

You are not sitting on the sofa because you are a slob. You are sitting on the sofa because your nervous system has entered a protective shutdown state.

The Shame Loop Keeps You Stuck

The problem is that we layer shame on top of the biology. You feel the freeze response, you interpret it as a character flaw (laziness), and then you beat yourself up.

Guess what self-judgement does?

It creates more stress.

More stress signals more danger to the nervous system. More danger equals a deeper freeze state.

It is a self-fulfilling prophecy. You can't bully yourself into safety. You can't shame yourself into functioning.

Why Rest Is Not Always The Answer

This is where it gets tricky. Often, well-meaning advice is to “just rest.” But have you ever tried to nap when your body is vibrating with anxiety or stuck in a freeze state?

When you are dysregulated, passive rest (like sleeping or watching TV) can sometimes make you feel worse because your mind is still racing.

What you actually need is safety, not just sleep.

To move out of a freeze state, we don't need to force productivity. We need to signal safety to the body. This might look like:

  • Gently swaying or stretching your body to wake it up.
  • Drinking a glass of cold water.
  • Doing one tiny, micro-task (like picking up one sock) to break the paralysis.
  • Speaking kindly to yourself, like you would to a small child who is scared.

Validation Is The Key

If you take nothing else away from this post, please take this permission slip.

You are allowed to feel the struggle.

You are allowed to have days where your capacity and energy is lower.

Your worth is not tied to your output.

You are not a broken machine that needs fixing.  You're a human being who needs regulating.

Next time that “lazy” accusation pops into your head, try correcting it. “I am not lazy. I am overwhelmed, and my body is trying to protect me.”

Be gentle with yourself. You are doing the best you can.

If you are ready to stop the shame cycle and learn how to actually work with your subconscious rather than fighting it, let's chat about how we can shift these patterns together.
