How to spot limiting beliefs hiding in everyday moments so you can move forward with clarity and confidence.
Most people imagine limiting beliefs as these dramatic, obvious things. A voice booming in your ear telling you you are not good enough or that your dreams are ridiculous.
If only it were that clear!
In real life, limiting beliefs are far more subtle and and some darn right sneaky.
They hide inside your everyday thoughts, the tiny decisions you make, the stories you repeat without noticing, and the way you talk about yourself when you think you are being realistic.
They can sound really true in the moment as we hoodwink ourselves about what is actually going on.
So before we get into the sneaky stuff, here is the simplest way to think about a limiting belief... it is any old story about who you are, what you are allowed to have, or what you think is possible that quietly shapes your behaviour.
You do not choose them.
You inherit them.
You absorb them.
They grow on you like weeds.
And they run in the background like a stubborn old outdated operating system that never downloaded the update.
You might not notice the thoughts these create.
You might notice the feeling it gives you in your body.
But you will more than likely seek the behaviour it creates. The hesitation. The shrinking. The stuckness. The overthinking. The apologising for breathing. These are all the shadows cast by a belief you have not yet met.
You will definitely see it in the outcome. Not being where you want to be in life, business, career, your relationships etc
Here is the good news: once you spot the belief, you have already started to loosen its grip. Awareness is the first crack in the armour.
Let us walk through a few common hiding spots. They might feel uncomfortably familiar... in the best possible way.
Language is one of the clearest clues. Your words often reveal the belief long before your mind catches up. Listen out for the gentle but limiting phrases that slip out when you are not paying attention:
This is not about overhauling your vocab but noticing with love. Nothing the phrases you say gives you a glimpse of the belief beneath. These beliefs forming your current identify and reality.
Catching the words you use. Starting to reframe them. This is one of the first possible steps to start moving forward.
Here are three simple markers to help you spot them as they appear:
I'm sure I am not the only one who has then declare 'What's wrong with me?' But the thing is nothing is 'Wrong' with the capital W emphasis we place on on ourselves. We can feel like we are broken. Like we will never be happy or able to do the thing, but really we are just running on a set of old rules that we haven't yet rewritten.
I always find comfort in that thought, empowered even in the darkest moment as I truly believe whatever I need to rewrite is figeroutable.
Breathe!
Start small.
Pick one tiny action or inaction that you want to explore with love and kindness. Supersleuth it and ask “What is this behaviour showing me?” “What belief/s are underneath it?” “What are they trying to protect me from?”
Awareness is how you stop running on old code.
Awareness is how you can start to choose differently.
And every time you recognise a belief instead of obeying it, you can take a quiet but powerful step back into your own agency and start to decide how you want to move forward because you deserve to live as the you you want to be and are becoming, not who you were taught or encouraged to be by life so far.
If part of you is thinking, “I can see the belief, but I do not know how to shift it,” that is completely normal.
Belief Coding® is one way of working beneath the surface, supporting change at the root rather than forcing yourself to think differently.
